Do you remember the first time you held a pencil?

Maybe you don’t remember exactly how old you were. But perhaps you remember those first wobbly letters, the excitement of making a mark, or the little drawings that only you could understand.

When I was little, I remember holding a pencil and watching something magical happen.

The moment its tip touched the paper, a mark appeared. Then another. Soon, beautiful letters and shapes began to emerge.

And that gentle scratching sound of graphite moving across paper?

Oh, how soothing it was!

I didn’t know much about creativity then. I just knew this little thing was magic.

A treasure hiding in plain sight

Isn’t it funny how we spend our lives searching for extraordinary things while overlooking the little wooden pencil sitting on our desk?

A child learning their name. A student solving a problem. An architect imagining a building. A scientist exploring an idea. An artist bringing a dream to life.

Different hands. Different ages. Different dreams.

One ordinary pencil.

It doesn’t ask whether you’re talented, experienced, young, or old.

It simply waits for your next idea.

How many extraordinary things in this world began with one tiny pencil mark?

The most forgiving little friend

And here’s something I love about pencils.

They let us change our minds!

Made a mistake? Erase it.

Drew a crooked line? Try again.

Didn’t like the idea? Start over!

If only life’s problems came with an eraser attached! 😂

Of course, we can’t erase everything that happens in life.

But we can learn, ask questions, find helpful resources, discover new knowledge, and try a different approach.

Sometimes the answer isn’t to give up.

It’s to get curious about what isn’t working.

Every attempt can teach us something the previous one didn’t.

From sharpening to charging!

And look how much our little friend has evolved.

Once, we sharpened wooden pencils.

Now we charge digital ones!

Apparently, even pencils have joined the technology revolution. 😂

I created and animated this playful pencil in Adobe Illustrator, and it reminded me of that first pencil I held as a child.

Today, I can draw, design, and animate with digital tools.

But that wonderful feeling of turning an idea into something visible?

It hasn’t changed.

Just make a mark

Sometimes we wait for the perfect idea or the perfect moment before beginning.

But a pencil doesn’t ask us to be perfect.

It just invites us to try.

Write something. Sketch an idea. Solve a problem. Doodle something silly.

I still do it almost every day.

Some marks become artwork. Some become lessons. Some simply make me smile.

And sometimes, the smallest mark leads to the biggest discovery.

The pencil gets shorter with every sharpening, but the possibilities keep growing.

So here’s a little invitation.

Pick up a pencil today—wooden or digital.

No expectations. No pressure.

Just see where your curiosity takes you.

And before you go, I’m curious…

What’s the first thing you remember drawing or writing with a pencil?

Perhaps it’s a memory you haven’t thought about in years.

I’d love to hear it.

With warmth, curiosity, and a little pencil magic,
